Marble rats may be shown in black & russian blue. To be devoid of dinginess, rusting, silvering and white hairs. Foot colour to match top. The unique feature is a pigmentation cluster in a dorsal stripe pattern of the dark base colour. This feature should display from nape of the neck to the tail and it must accompany a centralized splash-spot on the forehead/face. A marble rat will also have dark splash-spots distributed evenly throughout the entire lighter background color. The splash-spots should be numerous and distinct. Splash-spots will be less prominent on any colour lighter then black. Eye color to correspond to the body color.
Marble is not a colour on its own. It is a colour modifier. Marble appears to be a lethal dominant gene. The marble gene will express on all colours, although best displayed in black & russian blue. The lighter the base color of the rat, the less distinct the marble splash-spots will be. The dark pigmentation splash-spots of a marble rat are the base color. The background is a diluted version of the base. The spots are distinct when they are babies, but fade at their first molt then strengthen as the adult coat develops.

HISTORY
Our best known origin source of the marble gene is NERD (New England Reptile Distributors www.newenglandreptile.com) They were sold and bred as Merle's for years before it was confirmed to be a separate, unique gene.
